Kiwanis Club meets Wednesday

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The speaker will be Bev Fraser with Friends of the Children of West Hawaii.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Manao Pono Sustainability gives library presentation

Manao Pono Sustainability, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating food and resource security, offers an edible landscape talk from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Attendees will learn about delicious perennial plants that fit into any landscape. There will be a short demonstration on how to propagate by cuttings and how to share them. There will be handouts of a small variety of edible cuttings along with recipes and a live plant landscape garden display.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, this program is free.

Kuleana Education earns accreditation

Kuleana Education has achieved full accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

About to begin its third school year, Kuleana Education’s mission is to empower students through an integrated curriculum and experiential learning. The school provides a nurturing environment that encourages exploration, community involvement, and lifelong learning.

HCFCU collecting school supplies for island keiki

Notebooks, backpacks, pens, crayons and dozens of other school supplies are needed for thousands of Hawaii Island keiki this back-to-school season. Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union and Kakoo I Na Keiki (Support the Children) are asking Big Island residents to drop off donated items at any HCFCU branch by Wednesday. School supplies may be dropped off during business hours at the Kaloko, Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua, Kohala or Honokaa Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union branches.

Last year, more than 10,000 students in 35 schools around the island received these essential supplies.

Ukulele construction class coming up

Kona Community School for Adults is offering its popular ukulele construction class taught by Guy Sasaki at Kealakehe High School.

The 16-session class begins Aug. 15 and is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. each Monday until Nov. 28. Class fee is $120 cash (no checks or charge cards are accepted), plus $100 for materials. A list of required tools and supplies will be provided during the first session.

Registration is Aug. 1-12 at Kona Community School for Adults on the campus of Kealakehe Intermediate School. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 313-3032. The class is expected to fill up quickly.
